MLB Winter Meetings Day 2: Mulder eyes comeback, Trumbo heads to the desert

2013 WInter Meetings 2.jpgThe biggest deal of the day involved Mark Trumbo going to the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-team trade that also included the Los Angeles Angels and Chicago White Sox.

Trumbo, in only three full seasons, has become one of the most feared hitters in the game. Despite a drop in average of 34 points, he still managed to lead the team in homers (34) and RBI (100).

The Angels get relief pitcher Hector Santiago and former first round pick, Tyler Skaggs. Outfielder, Adam Eaton brings his .252/.314/.360 line and 22 RBI to the White Sox.

Is this considered a blockbuster? Technically not, but the D-Backs now have potent 3/4 combo with Trumbo joining MVP runner-up Paul Goldschmidt.

Mark Prior has officially retired.

Compared to phenom Stephen Strasburg, Prior's ascension to fame peaked during his junior year at USC; 15-1, 1.70 ERA in 18 starts with 202 strikeouts in 138 innings.

All signs pointed to Prior as a success. With unspoiled mechanics with the stamp of approval from pitching Guru Tom House. Unfortunately, injuries plagued Prior throughout his career, and the once promising superstar has officially come to an end. According to ESPN, he went on the disabled list with a shoulder injury when attempting a comeback with the Cincinnati Reds Triple-A squad last April.

Mark Mulder is back in the news. ESPN reports that Mulder, who hasn't pitched since 2008 wants to pitch again. He retired due to shoulder injuries after only five full seasons. The two-time All-Star has apparently been hitting 88/90 on the gun. When or not he gets an invite to Spring Training, this is something that should be followed closely. Mulder is only 36, and presumably, has two or three good years left if he can stay healthy.

The Oakland Athletics and Colorado Rockies completed a deal yesterday that won't bring the house down, but the main players acquired; Brett Anderson, and Drew Pomeranz, who have had their history of injuries, are hoping to start this new venture with a clean slate.

A's GM Billy Beane remembered Anderson as "Great talent and certainly moments of brilliance,"

In acquiring Pomeranz, Beane sees him as a starter, although a role out of the bullpen is more likely.

The rumour mill continues to churn out possible's and maybe's, but nothing solid has come to fruition.

Many names continue to fly throughout Lake Buena Vista; David Price, Shin-Soo Choo, starter Bronson Arroyo and Fernando Rodney. And of course, Matt Kemp's name is swirling, but I can't see the Los Angeles Dodgers letting him go. He is in the upper echelon of talent, and letting him go would be devastating. Of course, if a deal is to be has to be made...
