Blue Jays hook Goldeyes' Scoma

02/28/2014 6:15 AM - Devo

Ryan Scoma.jpgLast Monday, Winnipeg Goldeyes' Ryan Scoma had his contract purchased by the Toronto Blue Jays, according to a Goldeyes press release.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you can play the game, big league clubs will find you.

Like other independent trailblazers such as, Daniel Nava, Max Scherzer, Brendan Donnelly and J.D. Drew, regardless of where you make an impact, baseball is baseball. Indy baseball is not the end; it's a new beginning.

Scoma, a native of Red Wood City, California, was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 36th round of the 2009 MLB June Amateur Draft from University of California, Davis. He played three years in the Giants organization, his best year coming in 2010 when he batted .310 with a .337 on-base percentage. His batting average dropped nearly 60 points (.254) the following year. He was released by the Giants prior to the start of the 2012 season, but eventually signed with the Rockland Boulders of the Cam-Am League.

His one and only season with the Boulders showed the world that Scoma could hit for power. He was second on the team in home runs (13) and third in RBI (59), still maintaining a .310 batting average.

Wanting to be able to play closer to home in 2013, Scoma was traded to the Goldeyes for future considerations. He didn't put up the same power numbers as the year before, but was a monster at the plate, blasting American Association pitching at a .341 clip and was second in the league with an OBP over .440.

Despite losing one of their best players, Goldeyes manager Rick Forney has nothing but good things to say.

“We are thrilled for Ryan that he is getting this opportunity with the Jays, he did a tremendous job for us last year and we wish him the best back in affiliate baseball.”

Scoma will report to Spring Training with Toronto next month.
