Indy Ball Weekly Perspective: Canadian Shawn Hill returns to the Revolution

Welcome to the latest edition of the Indy Ball Weekly Perspective

Mississauga, Ontario native Shawn Hill is heading back to the independent York Revolution, according to the York Daily Record.

Originally drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 6th round of the 2000 Amateur draft, Hill was never considered a power pitcher. He's always had to rely on control to be successful. With a career .548 winning percentage in the minor leagues, it's pretty middle of the road, but his 1.27 WHIP is very good. He averages 5.5 strikeouts per nine innings and rarely walks anyone when he takes the mound (2.2 BB/9).

It's not that often that we see a Canadian born player play for both Canadian teams. Hill spent the first eight years of his career with the Expos/Washington Nationals. He also spent two years in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. During that time Hill did get his shot in the "Show". He's appeared at the Major League level in parts of seven seasons, winning 10 games and losing 18. His strikeouts and walks per nine innings are very similar to his minor league numbers (5.6/2.8), but spot starting at points during the year never really give him a realistic shot at making the starting rotation.

For what it is, Hill has been exactly as advertised. He's a guy that will give 5 emergency innings and pitch good enough to keep your team in the ball game. He spent all of last year with the Toledo Mud Hens, the Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. In 26 games, Hill won four and lost 10 while posting a 5.51 ERA. He was granted free agency this past November.

During Hill's first stint with the Revolution, Hill was dominant in every sense of the word. In a five-start streak for the ages, Hill threw 27.2 scoreless innings, (a Revolution record) and went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in his final five starts (2.43 overall). That vaulted Hilll back in the mix and scouts had to give him another opportunity. The Toronto Blue Jays signed him to a minor league contract, and he did not disappoint when he took the mound. In 15 starts with the Jays' Triple-A club in Las Vegas, he went 9-2 with a 4.52 ERA with 52 strikeouts and 22 walks in 89.2 innings.

At 32, Hill still has plenty of years left in the game, and going back to the Revolution is the best thing right now. Last year wasn't his best year, but he can still get guys out. He revitalized a career that many thought was over. Here's another chance to prove the critics wrong again.
