Jose Marmolejo, a Cincinnati Reds pitching prospect has been suspended for 50 games for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
The suspension was announced by the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball, who said that Marmolejo was sanctioned for the “use and possession of a prohibited performance-enhancing substance.”
Marmolejo, 20-year old, playing in the Dominican Summer League, is not putting up the numbers for someone that is using PED’s. In 13 games totaling just over 19 innings, he has given up 28 hits, 17 earned runs, and 19 walks against nine strikeouts. Opponents are batting a Ted Williams like .341 against him, while his ERA is hovering around the high seven’s.
10 games of the suspension have been served since the completion of the regular season, and he will serve the remaining 40 games when the 2010 campaign begins.
