For the fourth time in the last seven years, the Winnipeg Goldeyes are on top of the baseball world – at least in the Independent Northern League.
Winnipeg has now established itself as the only four-time winner since the award was handed out in 2003.
“This is an award to be shared by everyone associated with the Goldeyes and I speak on behalf of the entire organization when I say we are honored,” said president and CEO Sam Katz. “From top to bottom, this is a very solid organization. It is part of a very strong league, one that will become stronger next year with the addition of two more teams and will become even stronger in the years to come as more and more fans get to know this amazing product we call Northern League baseball.”
The Goldeyes’ journey to their 14th playoff appearance in 16 years produced an outstanding 278,009 fans en route to leading the Northern League in attendance for tenth-straight season. Their average attendance per game of 6,180 led all of the 63 independent league teams in professional baseball, a distinction they have held for the tenth-straight year.
“To know you do a good job is one thing, but when you are told this by your Northern League brethren, it becomes something else entirely,” said general manager Andrew Collier. “Each and every person that works for the Goldeyes, from our full-time staff to our game-day staff, had a hand in winning this award and it’s a tribute to all that they do to have once again been recognized. It’s also a tribute to our amazing fans, for without them, we wouldn’t even be here.”
Voting for the award was conducted by managers, coaches, players, radio announcers, media and general managers.
In another outstanding achievement earlier this month, Winnipeg general manager Andrew Collier was awarded Executive of the Year, his fifth time as the recipient of the award in the last eight years.
